Fighting Back
Life is becoming more and more unaffordable, and the president and his administration are intentionally making matters worse. Food insecurity is rising — food banks are stretching to serve more people and families, including many who work full-time jobs. The cost of living — housing, utilities, childcare — is painfully high. This president and his allies in Congress are withholding food benefits and villainously pushing people off Medicaid and housing vouchers.

Donald Trump is also attacking our communities, both here and across the country, by deploying federal agents against the American people for the explicit purpose of tearing apart our communities. Workers have been detained during routine interactions. People have been arrested in courthouses, schools, and places of worship. Families continue to be torn apart. This assault on our rights can only be described as illegal, unconstitutional, immoral, and deeply un-American.
This isn’t right. This isn’t the world my parents worked for, or that you deserve. And this is not a future I am willing to accept.

I want you to know that we are not only resisting— we’re fighting back. Since joining the Legislature, I’ve worked to make our state more affordable for every family--introducing bills to raise wages and create a statewide monthly utility bill assistance program. I am committed to making our tax structure fairer, bolstering workers’ rights, and commonsense laws like caps on rent increases. As Chair of the State Government and Tribal Relations Committee, I’m working to make our voting system more fair and just - one of the most powerful tools we have to protect ourselves, and one that is also under attack.

As a Latina, the attacks and abuses by federal agents are personal, and I’m speaking out because our families deserve dignity and our neighbors deserve to live without fear. Unchecked and violent enforcement harms communities and undermines the rule of law, and I’m proud that, in both the courts and the Legislature, Washington state is challenging federal immigration enforcement practices that threaten constitutional rights and public safety.

I believe--and I know that you believe too--in our ability to build a future of dignity, safety, opportunity, and joy for everyone. Together, we can stand up to Donald Trump’s assault on our community and make the American Dream as real for people today as it was for my parents. That is what this campaign is about.

My parents came to this country in pursuit of the American Dream. Growing up in the Tri-Cities, my three brothers and I had a strong start in life because of their hard work. It’s getting more and more difficult for people starting their lives and families to build that solid foundation. The American Dream is becoming unattainable for most people, and today, the sad truth is that the federal government is doing everything it can to put it out of reach for you and your family.
