Public Safety

VALUE STATEMENT

All of us, no matter who we are, deserve to be safe and feel safe. That means being able to count on police to come when called, and to operate in a professional manner reflecting the highest training standards. It means sufficient funding for access to health care, including a strong behavioral health system that provides the care that people experiencing crisis need. And it means rapidly expanding housing and shelter of all types, as well as making it easier for people to make their rent or mortgage payments, to bring our neighbors inside.

Public safety is about many things — including having accountability and trust in our institutions.

Today, our community needs not only protection from crime but also from federal immigration officials bringing violence, fear, and unlawful actions to our neighborhoods. I have fought to ensure safe, professional operations by law enforcement are the standard in our state, but the conduct of ICE both here and in cities across America makes everyone, no matter your immigration status, unsafe. I will never stop working to ensure that everyone in the 29th District is safe in public, and that includes taking strong action against vicious federal overreach meant to tear our community apart.

AGENDA

  • Ban the use of face coverings or masks by law enforcement officers.

  • Make it a crime to impersonate any federal or state law enforcement agency or vehicle.

  • Establish reporting requirements and law enforcement responses for incidents at private detention facilities like the Northwest Detention Center.

TRACK RECORD

  • Sponsored and voted for legislation to ban statewide the practice of “hog-tying” by law enforcement that has caused the death of people in custody.

  • Sponsored the law that bans the deployment of other states’ National Guard into Washington state without the consent of Washington state.
